Swedish Vallhund Breed information

Rugged herding dogs in a unique package

“Friendly, Energetic, Watchful”

Swedish Vallhunds are sturdy, zesty, high-energy dogs. Don’t let their compact size fool you; they are similar to an Australian Cattle Dog or Border Collie in energy and drive. If you like to be offered a toy the first thing when you wake up (or in the middle of the night) and have a dog ready to work at any moment, then a Vallhund could be the perfect friend for you.

The AKC description of the breed (which you can find a link for below) may slightly understate the energetic nature of the breed, especially for the Wild Hunt line. While they do have an off switch, it needs to be trained. They can be willful troublemakers and need a clear, firm handler to make sure they don’t end up running the show.

Spitz and herding group

In the United States, the Swedish Vallhund shows in the herding group, but in Denmark, they are part of the Spitz group with other “ancient” breeds like the Malamute and the Shiba Inu. Vallhunds have a double coat and do best in cooler weather.

They can be born with no tail, a stub, or a fully curled tail like their spitz cousins. They can vary in color from grey (like our main female Pepper) to red or brown with flashes of white.
